With the continual increase of trains running on the West Coast Main Line and the introduction of faster services between major stations, the current Overhead Line Equipment is quickly approaching its maximum electrical load capacity.

As part of Network Rail’s commitment to provide a safe and reliable railway fit for the 21st Century and in order to meet future increases/demand for rail services on the WCML the system needs to be updated. The solution that has been chosen is an Autotransformer (ATF) arrangement.

BCS Design Ltd has been appointed by ABC Electrification Ltd to validate 24 existing OLE supporting masts on the West Coast Mainline. The scope included verifying the mast behaviour due to additional ATF loading where ATF is supported on the structures.

Where structures failed the standard criteria, BCS designed a strengthening solution that satisfies the deflection, yielding and buckling of the OLE mast requirements.

Before the installation of the proposed solution on site, BCS carried out an advance preview test assembly of the steel members in order to detect any queries that may arise from the installation.

Based on the analysis outcome, the contractor was advised on the necessary precautions that need to be taken during the installation of OLE mast strengthening solution.
